Andrew Thomas Grindle, St. Louis Park High School

The ships on the side of the hull are the two previous ships named USS MINNESOTA, the steam frigate from the Civil War and BB 22, from the Great White Fleet.  The stars on the border represent Minnesota as the 19th state admitted, after the original 13 states.  The gold and yellow background show the colors of grain our state historically exports.

  2. I love how you've represented the state into the design and how you've incorporated the history of the USS Minnesota. Great design!

  3. I really like the tie to the previous ships bearing the name MINNESOTA. It makes one curious about the history of these vessels! Nicely done.

  4. I am a little biased because Andrew is my nephew, but I love this design. I think that it is clean and crisp, highlighting this important new submarine and the state it is representing. I also love the colors he selected and the incorporation of the 19 stars and wheat, Minnesota’s grain.
What Andrew did not say in his description is that at the age of 15 he is able to sit with World War II veterans and discuss in detail US Military History. He has been a history buff for as long as I remember and in particular is very interested in US Military history.
I am very proud of him for taking this on and exceptionally proud that he has made it to the finals. Know that with his design he is incorporating not only history, but our future.

  5. This is a good, uncluttered design that will translate well into the many forms that this logo will be required to maintain. The 19 stars, representing the order of Minnesota's post colonial addition, ties in the advancement of the nation beyond its origins upwards to the role that a Virginia-class sub serves in the global theatre.
